Easy Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry syrup sure has gained popularity within the past couple of years. It’s immune boosting and virus fighting properties have gained all the attention. This is also a perfect yummy supplement that I give my kids to help keep their health in tip-top shape and reduce the duration of any cold or flu viruses that they might get.

Because let’s face it, our kids will get sick, so we have to be prepared! Wellness Mama was the first person that brought my attention to how awesome elderberry is & once we tried it, we never went back!

Studies are supporting the use of elderberry syrup for various illness. A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine showed that people that took elderberry syrup saw a quicker recovery within three days of the flu versus the placebo group of being sick twice as long. The people that took elderberry syrup also saw quick improvement of symptoms. Another study supporting the same exact theory and it showed elderberry helped relieve symptoms four days earlier than placebo. Elderberry is able to activate the immune system and it can reduce inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.

An animal study also showed how elderberry has the ability to possibly be a good anticonvulsant that is comparable to diazepam.

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups Purified Water
  • 1 Cup Dried Elderberries
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1/4 Tsp Ground Clove
  • 1/2 Tsp Ground Ginger
  • 3-4 Tbs Maple Syrup

Directions

  1. Put all ingredients (except maple syrup) in a pot and mix it all together.
  2. Bring it to boiling on med/high heat.
  3. Once it starts boiling, put the lid on the pot and turn down the heat to between low and medium.
  4. Let it cook for 20-30 minutes.
  5. After it’s done, strain out the elderberries.
  6. Mix the maple syrup with the finished elderberry syrup. I like to not have it super sweet. So you can play around with the maple syrup measurement depending on how sweet you want it.
  7. Ta-Da! Store in fridge!

P.S. The 1-lb bag you’d get lasted me at least 5 batches of elderberry syrup. It’s such a cheaper way to make it. You can buy pre-made version of elderberry syrup at the store, but for 3x more money!
